WORLD-CLASS CRAFT DISTILLERY

EXPERIENCE EXCEPTIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP

Visit Virunga Mountain Spirits at the foothills of the Virunga Mountains.

Schedule a tour & tasting to experience our process firsthand through sight, taste, and touch.

You will tour the property and learn about the region’s rich history, walk through our demonstration farm and distillery and discover how Kinigi potatoes are transformed into our premium craft vodka.

How We Make It

Potatoes sourced from unloved Kinigi potato harvest. Mashing and fermentation. Triple distillation through copper pot still and 20-plate column. Blended with gravity-fed water from the Virunga volcanic terrain. Filtered through locally sourced lava rock before bottling. Copy as per April implementation brief — ‘volcanic terrain’ replaces all instances of ‘highland.’

Architecture

Lava stone building, hand-carved by local craftspeople. 80% Musanze construction labor. 30% women. Imigongo panel design.

Architect – Bruce Engel.

Kari Gin — Now Distilled Here

The second spirit from Virunga Mountain Spirits — and Rwanda’s most ambitious botanical expression to date. Ten carefully selected botanicals, including Kinigi potato flower, lemongrass, and gooseberry sourced from the volcanic terrain around the Virunga Mountains, are vapour-infused through a modified still.

About Kari Gin

Our distillery is located at the foothills of the Virunga Mountains.

Surrounded by rugged volcano peaks, the gorgeous Twin Lakes, Burera and Ruhondo — and forests filled with rare birds and primates — the largest of them the mountain gorillas made famous by primatologist Dian Fossey, drop by or book your visit today!

WASTE

Our team sources small potatoes and potato by-products, fermenting and then distilling it to extract the alcohol. Most waste will be potato slurry and water that can be reused for compost or animal feed.

NOISE

Distilling is almost silent, generating as much sound as a boiling pot of water. Other sounds may result from bottling or moving product, but these would be no louder than the clinking of glass.

FUMES/POLLUTION

Distilleries do not generate fumes or pollution. All processes are driven by water and steam only.
